The Square, some shops and an illustrious citizen is honoured in 1886

The Square is looking particularly beautiful these days.

A Change of colour for O’Connor’s

O’Connor’s in Market Street looks completely different with its new paint job. Refurbishment work to the interior of the shop is also underway.

Further back Market Street a new Ladies clothes shop has opened. Even though the sign over the door hadn’t been painted when I photographed it, I am reliably informed it’s to be called Blossom.

Meanwhile back on Church Street………..

I am presuming that this name sign is temporary and that this shop facade will be restored to its former glory when this shop eventually opens.

ADDRESS TO MR. M. J. FLAVIN.

A PUBLIC MEETING. Listowel,
Thursday.

Last night a large and influential public meeting of the inhabitants
of the town was held in the Town Commissioners Room, for the purpose of
presenting an address to Mr. M. J. Flavin, on the occasion of his departure from
his native town, to Bismark Dacota, America. It may be mentioned that Mr.
Flavin while acting hon. secretary to the Listowel Branch of the Irish National
League, gained for himself the goodwill and confidence of every member of that
body, and I may state that this good feeling was not confined to the National
League, for even persons whose principals were entirely antagonistic to those
held by members of that organisation  hold him in the highest estimation,
and gave him credit for the honesty of his convictions. In fact Mr. Flavin’s
upright and straightforward action since the first day he identified himself
with the National Cause, for which he worked untiringly, was recognized by
every person, and now redounds immortally to his credit.

Amongst those present were — Messrs
P. D. Griffin, J. Enright, T.C. ; J. P. Enright, J. Tracy, T.C. ; M. Kirby,
T.C. ; P. Hennessy, M. Hannan, J. Tackaberry, J. O’Sullivan, T Collins, J. A.
O’Sullivan, D. Loughnane, P. J Houlihan, D. Lyons, J. H. O’Sullivan, J. J. Keane,
J. W. Canty, V.S. ; C. Moran, N Scollard, T.C. ; T . Keane, J. J. Dillane, J.
Horgan, and T. Brosnan.

On Mr. M. J. Flavin entering the
room he was received with loud applause.

On the motion of Mr. P. D. Griffin,
which was seconded by Mr. P. J. Houlihan, the chair was taken by Mr. J. Troy,
T.C. The Chairman said, he supposed they were all aware what they were
assembled for ; they were there for the purpose of presenting Mr, Flavin with
an address, and to wish him success in his voyage across the Atlantic (hear,
hear). It was needless for him to tell those present what Mr. Flavin did for
the National Cause, as they were all perfectly aware of his efficiency while he
was acting as honorary secretary to the local branch of the Irish National
League (hear, hear). He had done everything and earned nothing by it (hear,
hear).

Mr. Scollard, T.C.—We are only sorry he is parting from us at such an
early day.

Mr. Griffin—Gentlemen, it gives me
great pleasure to be called upon to read this address to Mr. Flavin, and I
believe it is very few young men of his age ever deserved better the good wishes
of his fellow-townsmen than Mr. Flavin (hear, hear).

The following is the address :—

DEAR MR FLAVIN,- We, the
undersigned inhabitants of this town, and members of the Irish National League,
are of opinion that we would be shirking the duty that should devolve upon all
lovers of justice and impartiality if we were to allow the occasion of your
departure from amongst us without testifying to the high esteem in which you
have been justly held by your fellow-townsmen, and we are perfectly satisfied
we can speak for the county also on this occasion.

For years while honorary
secretary to our branch of the Irish National League you have discharged the
duties of your office with an amount of impartiality and tact, that gained for
you that favour even of your opponents in politics. Fully alive to the onerous
duties often imposed on you, it appeared no trouble to you to cope with the
most trying difficulties in connection with your position. In your private as
well as in your commercial capacity you were kind and courteous, always ready
to act a friend and give kind advice. On the whole we believe you fully worthy
of this, the only means we have of our recognition of your worth in the past.

Wishing you a hearty God speed in your journey to the far West, where we hope
your future undertakings will be crowned with all the success and happiness
which make life dear, we beg to subscribe ourselves faithfully and truly
yours.”

[Here followed the names of
subscribers which were too numerous for publication].

Mr. M. J. Flavin—Mr. Chairman, and
gentlemen, I return you my sincere thanks for the high honor which you have
conferred upon me (hear, hear and you’re worthy of it). I may tell you that
this came quite unexpectedly on me, and I can’t express in words to you the
feeling of pleasure with which I accept your address, and I shall ever remember
the kindness of the people of Listowel towards me. In my position as secretary
of the Listowel Branch of the National League, I always found the people
willing to act on my instructions. I shall in the future whether I stay in
America – or at home remember the kindness of the people of Listowel, and I
shall esteem the address which you have been so good to present me with, more
than anything else that could be placed in my hands.

Loud cheers were then raised, and
repeated for Mr. Flavin, after which the meeting terminated.

Mr. Flavin on leaving next morning
by the eight o’clock train was played to the railway station by the National
Brass Band, and a large concourse of people who cheered, him loudly.

Day out in Tralee with grandchildren aged 8

Friday August 15 2014 and The Rose of Tralee Festival is just getting underway.

My boys in Tralee Town Square contemplate where we’ll eat before we visit the attractions.

Ronaldo Fanzini was in Pearse Park with his twin Guido, entertaining the children. Here he is clowning with his new “family” composed of people plucked from the audience.

My boys sitting on the fountain in the town park. St. John’s church in the background.

Free fun! This is called zip lining and the boys loved it.

More expensive fun in the dodgems. A car each; heaven!

They had to make do with the  kiddies roller coaster, their adult companion being too chicken to accompany them on the big wheel and they were not allowed to ride it alone.

Shying balls at some cans seemed easy peasy. It wasn’t.

The School Around the Corner, Abbeyfeale 1964

Abbeyfeale schoolchildren April 4 1964

In a follow up to my story about The School Around the Corner to be held in Abbeyfeale in Fr. Casey GAA Hall on August 30 next. Michael Lynch send me this lovely Kerryman photo of three of the children who took part in the original programme.

The Kerryman caption read;

THREE OUT OF FIVE

These three Abbeyfeale children are in a team of five which will represent Munster in the Grand Finale of “The School Around The Corner” programme from Telefís Éireann on April 12 next.  From left: 11 year old Tim Healy of Knocknasna (mouth-organ); 11 year old James Woulfe, The Hill (bodhrán); 13 year old Sheila Prendiville, St. Ita’s Terrace (Irish Dancing with a skipping rope).  The boys are pupils of the Abbeyfeale Boys’ National School and Sheila goes to school at the Mercy Convent.

McKenna Stack Listowel connection

Recently among the claims for compensation that I included in the blog there was an account of Jack McKenna and the losses he suffered during the Troubles.

Across the seas in South Carolina a regular blog follower read this item with interest and this is the email she wrote;

“I thank you so for your newsy notes and photos.  John Mckenna of Market St is an ancestor of mine though my Great great grandfather Edmund Mckenna and Ellen Stack.  I have been in contact with his daughter in law Susan Mckenna and her husband Jack, through written letters in the past year.

Each morning I look forward to opening up your email with a “cuppa” coffee and smile as I read and view your postings.

Sheila Ryan Falkowski

South Carolina”

I replied to Sheila. The gist of my email,  “Tell me more”

Sheila’s reply;

“Miss Mary, I am only too pleased to share anything with you.  I am 73 and have been doing my Ancestry for about 2 years. I am 100% Irish as I had DNA done also.  All my dads family came from Waterford (the Walls) and Wexford, (the Doyles) and Nenagh, Tipperary, (the Ryans and Guilfoyles).

My moms side are the Mckennas, Stacks, and a Jane Ffoulkes, (I guess originally from a place called Thurles? evenutally to Kerry- my Edmund Mckenna( B: abt 1802, married an Ellen Stack , birthed abt 9 or 10

children of which I have 8 baptismal records, one of their daughters, Bridget Ellen born abt 1840, came to the USA about 1852, lived in Macon, Georgia during Civil War-married a Philip William Flood in 1860 in Macon.  He came from Cty Cavan and was a mason, served for the South during the Civil War-  they moved to Manhattan, NY in 1868 and had 11 children, 8 of which survived.

Ellen Stack was my great great grandmother on my moms side and her name is listed as Ellen Stack on my great grandmothers death cert from New York City in 1926.  I just can’t seem to find Ellen Stacks fathers name, but suspect it is perhaps Maurice as Maurice is a name featured several times starting with a son of Ellen Stack and Edmund Mckenna.  I am surely aware of the Irish naming patterns.  Oh the mysteries of life as we search for our dearly departed and ponder their trials and tribulations and imagine their clothing and daily lives.

Every time I see “Listowel connection”  a little butterfly flutters in my “tum” and what a lovely start to my day!

I am more than happy to extend an email invitation to my Ancestry trees as they are public, but will only do so if you are interested.  And I shall continue to comment if you don’t mind.  I do hope Jack and Susan are faring alright-they are of an advanced age however very strong and of good health.

Regards

Sheila Mary”

Great golfing story from the U.S.

From Jack O’Donoghue came the following email;

Just a bit of fun from the States; my brother and I started a family golf outing called the O’Donoghue Open and have a photo  of the coveted Listowel Cup that is awarded to the two man team champions.  The event started a few years back with a small number, as we restrict participation to just bloodline family members, but this year we have 32 golfers from all over the US participating and over 100 relatives attending the post event dinner.  We can submit more photos of the event as it will be taking place this Sat Aug 9th if you wish?  No big deal if not appropriate to post.  We all share a common bond with Listowel being the birth place of all of our mothers or fathers.  My father in particular was ( God rest his soul ) Tom O’Donoghue.

Day or night Ballybunion looks stunningly beautiful. RTE were in town to film the Rose of Tralee escorts being put through their paces to have them in top shape for the festival. They played tag rugby against the local girls, they did a bit of surfing and angling. They played a round of golf and topped it off on Saturday night with a campfire and a sing song on the beach.
