Ladies Day 2016 and Junior Griffin at 80

A Thing of beauty is a joy forever

Ladies Day at Listowel Races 2016 was the biggest day in terms of numbers of the Listowel meeting.

There were prizes for the best dressed lady, the best dressed young racer and the best dressed couple. There was plenty for the judges to choose from.

Maria Stack’s handbag was made especially for her using her own photos of her syndicate’s horse.

John (Junior Griffin) at 80

Junior would pass for a man 30 years younger. He is fit and healthy and still contributing as a volunteer to his town and his county. If you meet him on the street be sure to congratulate him on the big birthday. He tells me that his old boss, Jack McKenna, has a birthday this week as well. He will be 98.

Junior always has a story to tell. He is one of Listowel’s best company to be in. He told me that he and the late Justin Stack were born in Miss Chapman’s lying in hospital in Church St. They were born within an hour  of one another but because it was either side of midnight Junior’s birthday is on the 17th and Justin’s was on the 16th. Justine used to refer to Junior as “young Griffin” and Junior called Justin “old Stack”.

Junior’s nieces and nephews came from near and far, from Belgium and England to celebrate with him in The Listowel Arms on Sunday. His niece, Imelda, sent me this photo of them all with their beloved uncle.

I took a few photos of Junior after morning mass on Monday Sept 19 2016 when he was 80 years and one day. With him in my photo are his friend and old work colleague, John Brosnan and P.J. and Joan Kenny.

The Races…the first photos

Races 2016

The sun has set over Listowel Races 2016 and I’m slowly getting back to normal after all the excitement. I went to The Island on 5 of the seven days and I have some great stories to tell, so call back here during the week and you might find something interesting to amuse you.

My betting was less than a resounding success. I usually back horses who bear the names of people I know and love. Seanie was a typical bet……no joy!

I met Listowel’s Joe Broderick on Wednesday and he told me that he was going all out to win the vintage fashion competition on Saturday. He had his outfit. he told me and he had his story (the story is an important part of this competition). Proof of the pudding is in the eating as his victory on Saturday shows.

I’ll let you know the whole story one day soon. My photo shows Joe making his way through a throng of admirers in the Guinness tent after the best interview of the day on Saturday September 17 2016.

The lovely Mary O’Halloran had a beautiful outfit for every day she went racing. Isn’t her saddle hat just smashing? This lady with her friends, Maria and Anne, caught the eye of Tralee Today’s photographer. Anne and Maria had great stories and outfits on Saturday too. Watch this space!

Reimagining Cork

Do you remember this from last week? The mystery is solved. Danielle who follows the blog is in a position to know these things. She tells me that it’s all part of

Re imagining Cork

This is a great community project where local artists rejuvenate old and neglected parts of Cork. They are painting these welcome signs and on Culture Night they have drama and performance planned for North Main Street.

Look at  the subjects of the latest of these street paintings, none other than the two most famous Cork brothers at the moment.

I’m at The Races. Photos and stories next week. In the meantime, enjoy this trip to The Island

Listowel Races and More

Pig Racing, Tree felling in the park and some visitors

A Horse of a Different Colour at Listowel Harvest Festival

All Ireland Pig Races in Market Street;  The title sounded a bit grand but in fact it was a fairly local event as the runners and riders will show you.

The betting was handled expertly but was a bit of a trial for the punter. Each little piggy wig had his own dedicated bet taker so you had to wait for your chosen bookie to get to you in order to place your bet. My luck with the porkers matched my luck on the racecourse. My betting proved  a bit of a jinx.

The capacity crowd enjoyed the spectacle which was run in late evening sunshine.  You might see a few familiar faces here.

 And they’re off!

That’s my fellow at the tail of the field

Christy Walsh was the starter, whipper in and CEO of the operation. It was a great night’s entertainment.

Tree Felling in the Town Park

I took these photos in Childers Park on Tuesday, September 13 2016. I don’t know why this tree had to be felled but you can bet that there is a very good reason. A pity all the same.

Early autumn visitors

I met these visitors from Armagh in the park on Tuesday. They were enjoying exploring our heritage town on foot. They didn’t even know it was race week.

I met this little fellow in Listowel Town Park early one morning last week. He likes to have his breakfast at the table.

William Street Road Works

Signs pointing the way to the free car parks are beginning to appear on our streets. This is in preparation for the upcoming roadworks on William Street when on street parking will be limited.

Here is the low down.

  • Work will commence on Monday September 26th 2016.
  • Work is expected to last 9 weeks.
  • William Street, in 2 phases, will  be closed day and night.
  • Church Street will be 2 way.
  • On street parking on Church Street only on the side of the Garda Station.
  • Shops and footpaths on William Street will remain open throughout the upgrade.
  • Phase One from Lynch’s Corner to the Market Street junction: Traffic from Market Street will turn left at McKenna’s corner.
  • Phase Two from McKenna’s Corner to Charles Street junction: Traffic from Lower William Street will turn left into Market Street.

The whole thing will cost €600,000. Water, Gas and other underground works will all go on at the same time as the road resurfacing. I’m presuming there will be an archaeologist on site. Who knows what they might dig up when they go do delving under our town?  Remember they found a well under the road in The Square.
