My Trip to Kildare

This is a picture on a wall of the shopping centre in Kildare. It depicts Kildare town in bygone days. Kildare today is vibrant and lively. I visited my daughter there recently and found it a fascinating place.

Clíona is standing outside St. Brigid’s Cathedral, Kildare. St. Brigid came to Kildare in the year 480A.D.  Her abbey church was a simple wooden hut but she was a woman of great standing locally. She ruled over a double community of men and worn and the bishop was subordinate in jurisdiction to the abbess. I got this information from our guide and I have no reason to disbelieve it.

Over the centuries the abbey was built and flattened several times. The present cathedral was built by a Norman, Ralph of Bristol, who became bishop in 1223. It was ruined and restored several times since with a big restoration in 1896 and its final restoration  to its present state in 1996.

The cathedral is in weekly use by the Church of Ireland community in Kildare. It has some lovely stain glass windows, beautifully restored

An unusual feature of the church is effigies of sheelagh na gig inside the cathedral. These are usually found outdoors and their erotic nature makes them an unusual sight in sacred buildings.

There is a glass case within the foyer with replicas of bog finds from the Kildare area. The originals are in The National Museum.

These last photos are of men at work on the restoration of the windows.

One of Ireland’s tallest round towers stands on the site of the cathedral. For one daft moment I thought to climb it. Our guide took one look at me and advised that it would be best left for another day, as she felt we didn’t have enough time to get up and down before closing time. I understood her meaning perfectly.

Kilashee House

This is yours truly resting in the grounds of Kilashee House, a former convent, now a country house hotel. Its a lovely place just outside Naas with gardens, walks, a spa and good food. The nuns knew how to pick a perfect location. They were running Kilashee as a school until 1998 when it was sold.

An old railway carriage on the grounds.

It’s Summer !

Some scenes from summer 2015

T.J. MacSweeney was out photographing cattle.

Jim MacSweeney was in the Saltee Islands  photographing puffins.

Colette Nolan O’Connor was at the Mallow Garden Festival.

Jason of Ballybunion Prints wass bringing us lovely Ballybunion Beach scenes.

Meanwhile in Kenya, Jack ORegan and Yolanda Chakava are planning their September wedding. Lisdoonvarna has nothing on Niarobi when it comes to dowry negotiations. Jack has posted a video of the dowry negotiation party. It looks like it was a lavish affair akin to a wedding reception.

If you read Jack’s account of this traditional ceremony, prepare now to see for yourself in the video.

Poem for Fr. Pat Moore

Someone called Victor has penned this poem for Fr. Pat Moore who undergoes an operation for the removal of a cancerous tumor today.

Colosseum (For Pat Moore)

Ragged and weary, he takes up the sword

And hacked wooden shield,

Flung at at his feet as a mercy

In the dust of the Colosseum.

As once he did before.

Drawn,

Short-strawn,

to face the trident, net and mercenary gaze

of the feared and chiseled Nubian,

The thudding wooden gates

Send forth the drooling lions

And the hush.

Let it begin. Again.

The Colosseum Christian knows,

that spill his blood he must,

As it was on the Cross.

Only then the ancestors

Who quietly crowd the stalls,

like wind-blown prayers

May spirit him to safety

As they had before,

And will again.

The thoughts and prayers of all of North Kerry and beyond are with Fr. Pat at this time.

Swans in Ballyduff, Town League in Scoil Realt na Maidine

Swans in Ballyduff

When this swan nested in Ballyduff, my friend, Bridget O’Connor, kept a close eye (from a distance) on developments. In time the proud Mammy Swan hatched out a family of lovely cygnets. Bridget caught a series of snaps as Mammy Swan rose from her nest for a brief stretch. She captioned one of these photos “Winging it” and The Irish Examiner printed it in their Readers Photos section.

The swan and cygnets became such a popular attraction in Ballyduff that local people began calling her Kate Middleton, so many people were anxious to see her babies.

Welcome to Kerry

This is a photo from London Irish Centre’s Facebook page .

The London Irish centre run a yearly trip in conjunction with Kerry Emigrant Support Group, for 32 vulnerable Irish people who have not returned to Ireland in many years.

They send over a team of volunteers and staff to assist, and Kerry Emigrant Support Group hosts the group and pays for the project which is located in Ballybunion.

Here they are hitting the road at the weekend!

When we talk of emigration these days the image we see is happy young Irish people heading off to Australia of Canada. Many of these land good jobs, stay in touch with home through social media and have a tight and supportive network of friends.

Things were different in the fifties, when many of Ireland’s young people were forced to labour in poorly paid jobs in English cities. Many lost touch with home. Some have no family left here now. This aging population of Irish emigrants are often forgotten about.
