River Feale, some Listowel people, Flavins, Female T.Ds and an uplifting story

After Storm Desmond

I took the following photos on Sunday Dec 6 2015

The flood of Saturday had abated but there was still a lot of water in The Feale.

I didn’t venture on to the walkway under the bridge.

Today’s blast of Nostalgia

Does this take you back? This was the very first mixer tap, invaluable for shampooing the hair or washing the dog. This was back in the days before showers when everyone took a bath.

I believe in God even when she is silent

photo; Michelle Crean

Fr. Pat Moore shared this great story that he found recently

In a mother’s womb were two babies. One asked the other:

“Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.”

“Nonsense” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?”

The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.”

The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.”

The second insisted, “Well I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.”

The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover if there is life, then why has no one has ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.”

“Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.”

The first replied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then where is She now?”

The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. Without Her this world would not and could not exist.”

Said the first: “Well I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.”

To which the second replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above.”

The Leahy family had a First Holy Communion.

 Other people had a wedding

This Greenville gang were enjoying the spectacle.

Garret and Trevor had the advantage of height to view the battle.

Donal O’Sullivan was working but he took a minute to pose with his daughter and granddaughter.

A Day for Ducks

This duck is being judged at The Kingdom County Fair. There were lots of animals and fowl in Ballybeggan on Sunday and they all looked in fine fettle to me.

Every time I encounter this lovely lady at an event I buy one of her homemade ice creams. Her wares are delicious and always dispensed with a smile even when the weather is the polar opposite of ice cream weather.

St. Mary’s at Easter

Our church looked resplendent this Easter. On Easter Sunday morning Canon Declan wore a beautiful new chasuble, an Easter present from the family of the late Rita Moloney of Bedford and the U.S.

The parish liturgy group excelled themselves this festival and their sacred space was a popular prayer place for young and old. Well done everyone!

Keeping Listowel Lovely

(photo: Listowel Tidy Towns)

Here are just a few of the many people who were out last night keeping Listowel tidy.

Duagh Summer Festival 2014, a war story and some successes

John Relihan, Fr. Pat Moore and Nina Hayes

When Duagh put on a festival, they do it in style. I was at their summer festival on Saturday last, Aug 9 2014 and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The festival was all about food and particularly about a local lad, John Relihan, who has made a name for himself as a chef. We were told that he was on Eastenders too, but I don’t know in what capacity he appeared in the soap.

This was the scene at the school gate where hundreds of people were queueing to get in. For €10 (all money going towards the restoration of the church bell tower) you got a wristband that entitled you to all you could eat of the barbecue, cookery demonstrations, competitions, face painting, balloon twisting, a craft fair and a chance to meet up with friends and acquaintances.

I met Marie, Ena and Catherine and we hung out for the afternoon.

My friend, Helen O’Connor was very proud to be photographed with her famous godson, The Jamie Oliver trained chef, John Relihan.

This was the Duagh schoolyard with chefs everywhere and animals cooking everywhere you looked.

If you look closely you will see that the chickens have a can stuffed where the sun doesn’t shine!

Above is the production line. I was snapping away as I queued for my dinner.

Can’t Cook;Wont Cook

The three Ready, Steady Cook contestants  get some last minute instructions from Brendan O’Connor of BBQ Joe’s.

Is Jerry getting a little helping hand or is it a case of the blind leading the blind.

Duagh Cooks get down to business.

Brendan keeps the contestants on track.

Jerry seems to be very pally with this judge.

Fr. Moore is interviewed about his cooking credentials. He tells a few tall tales of early rising and bread baking before breakfast.

How does it taste?

Should I add an egg?

<<<<<<

Demonstration

John Relihan and Brendan O’Connor gave food demonstrations and we got to taste.

The festival went on late into the evening and there was a second day of festivities on Sunday.

Well done to everyone involved. It was a huge success.

Definition of VALHALLA

1

:  the great hall in Norse mythology where heroes slain in battle are received

2

:  a place of honor, glory, or happiness :  heaven <an academic’s Valhalla>

These are the two definitions of Valhalla in Miriam Webster Dictionary. Both are apt for the players in Valhalla, Kentucky after Rory’s super win on August 10 2014.

This man is a frequent visitor to Listowel. He is Dick Cotter, grandson of Timothy (Tasty) Cotter who was a local rate collector and carpenter and once ran a shop at Scully’s Corner. Dick retains many happy memories of summers spent in Bridge Road with his grandmother and his aunt Cecilia. Dick is a keen family historian and is on a search for his Shanahan connections or for some clue as to why the Cotters came to Kerry and particularly to Listowel in the first place.

Apropos our discussion about various kinds of oil lamp, Junior Griffin pointed me to an article in The Kerry Badminton Association’s 75 Years centenary book. In an article by the late Paddy Sugrue,  President of Kerry Badminton association in 1982/83, Paddy gives an account of the setting up of his local club, Drangan in Co. Tipperary.

“We didn’t have electricity in the village then and four Tilly lamps gave us sufficient light to play. Later we added two more lamps. Such was the foundation of Drangan badminton club in Co. Tipperary. What loyal and enthusiastic members we had in those days. After a few months we decided to enter for The Brady Cup in Clonmel. We were drawn against Collins’ Hall A team. They were minus 8 and we were plus 8. Innocents abroad…we didn’t win a game.
