Sobering Thought for Christmas Week

The story comes from Limerick Life

The History of
St. Bridget’s Burial Ground

This is one of the saddest and most
hidden graveyards in the city, it is located behind the Watchhouse Cross
development on the Killeely Road. It is known locally as “The Paupers
Graveyard” or “The Yellow Hole”. In 1841 on construction of the Union
Workhouse, now St. Camillus’ Hospital a burial ground was required for those
poor departed souls who were left without means or family, for a number of
years the inmates were buried in Killeely Graveyard, Thomondgate. As the famine
years grew longer and the graveyard became overcrowded the concern of health
risks to the local inhabitants arose.

In 1849 the Union Workhouse Board of Guardians leased the plot
of land to become known as St. Bridget’s Graveyard, this site had previously
been occupied as the remains of a ringfort, some of which can still can still
be seen today to the right of the large cross on the hill. The presence of this
ringfort, which would have been known in the 1850s up until relatively recently
as a “fairy fort” would have had many superstitious connotation for
those living in the area at the time.

The graveyard acquired is name “The Yellow Hole” as during the
height of the Great Famine when the graveyard was in use multiple burials were
a daily event. Large holes were dug to accommodate the dead. The area was a
boggy one and below the suface of the boggy earth was a deep band of yellow
mud, which is common in boggy areas six to thirteen feet below the bogland.
Quicklime was probably used as a disinfectant and means of speeding up
decomposition. Each layer of bodies would be concealed under a shallow layer of
earth, with later burials laid on top of earlier ones. This mixture of
quicklime and decomposing bodies would also have caused a yellow soap-like
substance at the bottom of the pit.

During the early years bodies were laid coffinless in rows of
six dressed in sacking cloth. There were as many as 500 people a month buried
at the height of the graveyards use, and over 5,000 people are thought to be buried
in the graveyard. The last known person to be buried there was in 1940. Over
the years the graveyard became derelict until the Limerick
Civic Trust
in 2010 cleaned up the site and erected a new cross.
They also planted wildflowers on the site, making it a peaceful sanctuary.

Michael Hogan “Bard of Thomond” was greatly effected by the site
of the unfortunate souls who found themselves in the workhouse and ultimately
in St. Bridget’s Graveyard a fate which he himself only narrowly escaped. This
is a snippet of his poem of the famine era in Limerick.

Michael
Hogan, The Bard of Thomond

‘Twas in
ruthless Forty-Seven

When the plague-fraught air was
riven

With the sound which harrowed heaven,

Of a famished
people’s cry…

.. In a place
of shadows sunless,

Barren, sombre, treeless,
tuneless,

Weird, sepulchral, starless, moonless,

Yet not wholly
wrapt in gloom…

.. All my
heart, with horror shrinking

On a
thousand dread things thinking,

I advanced- each footstep sinking

In
the corpse-befatted ground…

Local Journals

(Photo: Kay O’Leary)

Anthony Lawless and Caoimhe reading the Lyreacrompane and District Journal 2014.

This is one of the many invaluable publications that come out every year at this time. These magazines are full of local social history, photos and anecdotes. They are an invaluable source for local historians and the people who toil on them do great work in preserving an account of what our lives are like today and how our forefathers fared in time gone by. They deserve our support. So go out and buy The Ballylongord Journal, The Ballyguiltenane Yearbook, or one of the many great books out there.

The Advertiser is free and the Christmas edition is a great record of the year gone by.

Birthday Celebrations in Craftshop na Méar

The crafters and friends had a great party on November 22. The shop was packed and everybody was having a good time.

Sean Lyons, chairman of Listowel Writers’ Week, came to give the venture his blessing. He is pictured with Bernie Carmody.

The very talented Amy O’Sullivan played the accordion and flute.

A section of the audience listening to Liz Dunne read a Christmas poem.

Clodagh Murphy learned 6 new tunes especially for her performance. She was just one of the many  people showcasing their talents in the lovely space that is Craftshop na Méar.

Anne and Carmel met up for the first time in a while.

Abraham posed for me with his friends, Mary and Patricia.

Namir and one of the very talented crafters, Eibhlín Gleeson of Tigh Polly.

The crafters cooked the goodies and Namir made the mulled wine and provided the birthday cake. It all went down a treat with shoppers and visitors.

All in all, a great day. Happy birthday, Craftshop na Méar. Here’s to many more birthdays!

St. Mary’s Parish Church, Listowel August 2014

St. Mary’s Parish Church, Listowel is an absolutely beautiful church with very striking mosaic work in the sanctuary and some beautiful stained glass windows. The recent work on the floor has enhanced it even further. In my opinion, our church is now a new visitor attraction and worthy of asking tourists to make a detour to visit. It is, of course, primarily a place of worship and in that regard is a peaceful and prayerful place.

This is the piece of tile work that marks the recent refurbishment of our local parish church.

Just a bit of work remaining to be done in the adoration chapel.

I was thrilled to see this. Wheelchair users are welcomed with their own designated places, centralized in the congregation. Well done to whoever is responsible for this.

This is Ruby. She is 12 years old and useless for breeding purposes. She is dearly loved by everyone in Kennedy’s Pet Farm. She and several other more valuable animals and birds were stolen from the farm on Friday night last.  Ruby may be dumped when the thieves realize that she has no sale value. Duagh Summer Festival 2014, a war story and some successes

John Relihan, Fr. Pat Moore and Nina Hayes

When Duagh put on a festival, they do it in style. I was at their summer festival on Saturday last, Aug 9 2014 and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The festival was all about food and particularly about a local lad, John Relihan, who has made a name for himself as a chef. We were told that he was on Eastenders too, but I don’t know in what capacity he appeared in the soap.

This was the scene at the school gate where hundreds of people were queueing to get in. For €10 (all money going towards the restoration of the church bell tower) you got a wristband that entitled you to all you could eat of the barbecue, cookery demonstrations, competitions, face painting, balloon twisting, a craft fair and a chance to meet up with friends and acquaintances.

I met Marie, Ena and Catherine and we hung out for the afternoon.

My friend, Helen O’Connor was very proud to be photographed with her famous godson, The Jamie Oliver trained chef, John Relihan.

This was the Duagh schoolyard with chefs everywhere and animals cooking everywhere you looked.

If you look closely you will see that the chickens have a can stuffed where the sun doesn’t shine!

Above is the production line. I was snapping away as I queued for my dinner.

Can’t Cook;Wont Cook

The three Ready, Steady Cook contestants  get some last minute instructions from Brendan O’Connor of BBQ Joe’s.

Is Jerry getting a little helping hand or is it a case of the blind leading the blind.

Duagh Cooks get down to business.

Brendan keeps the contestants on track.

Jerry seems to be very pally with this judge.

Fr. Moore is interviewed about his cooking credentials. He tells a few tall tales of early rising and bread baking before breakfast.

How does it taste?

Should I add an egg?

Demonstration

John Relihan and Brendan O’Connor gave food demonstrations and we got to taste.

The festival went on late into the evening and there was a second day of festivities on Sunday.

Well done to everyone involved. It was a huge success.

Definition of VALHALLA

1

:  the great hall in Norse mythology where heroes slain in battle are received

2

:  a place of honor, glory, or happiness :  heaven <an academic’s Valhalla>

These are the two definitions of Valhalla in Miriam Webster Dictionary. Both are apt for the players in Valhalla, Kentucky after Rory’s super win on August 10 2014.

Tarbert goes west

When I arrived for my break in The Derrynane Hotel I was surprised to see so many Tarbert people in the hotel lobby. It transpired that Joan Murphy was with a Tarbert group on a historical tour of the peninsula when they called in to meet their old friends, David and Mary O’Connor in the Derrynane Hotel before going home.

The hotel is a lovely family run, family friendly retreat in an absolutely beautiful corner of this lovely county.

The view from my hotel room window. The seagull came every morning.

Food miles are kept to a minimum here. This is the hotel’s herb garden.

The O’Connors believe in supporting local producers and everywhere you looked in the hotel, there were local crafts on display and in use.

Derrynane Fairy Trail

Regular readers of this blog will know that I am a big fan of the fairy folk and this summer, in the company of my lovely grandchildren, I have enjoyed many fairy related experiences.

Derrynane is the best.

The woods are dense and the path surrounded by lush greenery. A great habitat for fairies.

The little fairy houses are beautifully constructed and often concealed in the trees. Looking for them was part of the fun.

This is the fairy restroom, a kind of public toilet for fairies who might find themselves short taken while out and about in the woods.

There is a ruined tower in the wood. Nearby a fairy architect has designed a replica for his fairy client.

I have given you just a taste of this magical place. The Fairy trail is in the woods beside Derrynane House. When you are finished visiting the fairies, you can have tea in the tearooms and visit Daniel O’Connell’s chariot. Derrynane beach is also within walking distance so this is an ideal place for a day out with small ones.

Loom Banding; Summer 2014’s craze

Three year old Cora gets to grips with her loom.

So many bands, so little time!

You can also make loom bracelets on your fingers.

Voilá

Garvey’s Super Valu are having a loom banding day on July 25th next with demonstrations and competitions galore.

By the way I could swear that I noticed that Rory McIlroy wore a band bracelet throughout the Open and his mother was wearing one on Sunday. Rory’s Sunday one matched that fashion mistake of  a grey and pink get up that Nike kitted him out in.
