I love this photo that John Kelliher took of me on St. Patrick’s Day 2018. There I am at the parade, preparing my blog post.

Before I went to the parade, I had the bright idea of going to the church to snap some photos of local people on their way to mass.

I didn’t get everyone’s photo. Here are just a few of the good folk of Listowel parish at 11.00 a.m. mass in St. Mary’s on St. Patrick’s Day 2018.

As I made my way through The Square, the viewing platform was being decorated and Donal O’Sullivan was putting the finishing touches to the sound system.

At St. Mary’s ushers were beautifully turned and at the ready.

 Floor manager, Ronnie Patterson, and chief celebrant, Canon Declan O’Connor, were finalising plans.

 Jimmy Hannon was the first of the musicians to arrive. He had a story to tell.

It takes a musician to recognise a musician. Jimmy twigged that Ronnie Patterson the floor manager with Kairos who were filming the mass and making the programme for RTE, was, in fact, none other than the same Ronnie Patterson who played the double bass with the seventies group, The Pattersons. Jimmy put this knowledge to work and brought his double bass and guitar to the Listowel Arms and along with John Kinsella they had a great old session of seventies hits.

Everyone who had a part to play was dressed to impress.

These men were on a mission. The man second from left is a Stack and these are the Danish branch of the clan. They picked a bad day to research their roots as people were a bit preoccupied with other things. But if they would like to contact me again, I’ll be happy to help. You see I was on a mission myself and I didn’t have a card or a pen and paper handy so I have no contact details.

St. Patrick’s Weekend 2018 in Listowel


What a weekend we had ! It will take me a day or two to bring you all my photos.

On March 16th 2018 the scene was set. The schedule was up in The Square. The sun was shining and we were all set.

The shop windows were decorated.

We were not just having a parade. We were welcoming the Rith runners to our town. These runners had set off from Belfast at the beginning of Seachtain na Gaeilge, carrying with them a baton which held a message of support for the Irish language from President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins.

Our green clobber was in order and we were looking forward to the big day.

Finesse window was decorated with messages of support for everyone involved in all the festivities.

At St. Mary’s a full rehearsal was in progress. The folk group were in fine voice. I had always known that they would do us proud on the big day but when I heard them in rehearsal I knew that they would exceed all expectations.

The first of my visitors arrived bringing Molly (their new dog) on her first visit to The Kingdom.

Listowel Folk Group

One of the Listowel highlights of St. Patrick’s Day 2018 was the programme broadcast from St. Mary’s. It includes mass in Irish and some lovely footage of Listowel with yarnbombing for International Woman’s Day and an introduction by Owen MacMahon.

The music of Listowel Folk Group was heavenly and everyone involved did us all proud. The link to the programme is live until April 16 2018

Helping the Beach Artist




No trip to Listowel would be complete without a trip to Ballybunion. My girlies were delighted when Mario allowed them to “help” him sculpt his St. Patrick’s Day beach artwork.

What Mario Perez does is amazing and Ballybunion is so lucky to have him.

A Treasure from The Kerry Museum 


This brooch was found in Tullahennel near Ballylongford, Co.Kerry by Mrs Sheila Edgeworth whilst clearing out her ashes from the range at her home. It had been unwittingly thrown into the fire the night before concealed in a sod of turf. It miraclously surived. c.600AD

Detroit Parade 2018



I had a relative on the ground in Detroit last Sunday, March 11 2018, when they were celebrating St. Patrick and Irishness. Here in pictures is his report;

I googled him and here is what I learned.

Blessed Solanus Casey (November 25, 1870 – July 31, 1957) – born Bernard Francis Casey[1] – was an American Roman Catholic priest and a professed member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.[2][3] He was known during his lifetime as a wonderworker, for his great faith, and for his abilities as a spiritual counselor – but especially, for his great attention to the sick, for whom he celebrated special Masses. The friar was much sought-after and came to be revered in Detroit where he resided. He was also a noted lover of the violin, a trait he shared with his eponym, Saint Francis Solanus.[4][5]

His cause for beatification commenced over a decade after his death, and he received the title of Venerable in mid-1995. As a miraculous healing attributed to him was approved by Pope Francis in mid-2017, he was beatified in Detroit at Ford Field on November 18, 2017.[    Wikipedia

Listowel Football and Sporting Ballads


 Vincent Carmody gave us an essay on some of the sporting ballads written by Listowel people. I will serialise it over the next few days.

Listowel and the written word have been synonymous over the years, so it
is of no surprise that many of the town’s penmen have at various times put pen
to paper to record in verse form for posterity the deeds of man and beast.

One of the earliest pieces that I know of is a short unrhyming lament by
a player who had played for Listowel against Tralee. We do not know the result
of the match, nor the name of the writer,

Likewise, the Painach Somers,

Near his eye he got a kick,

Saying, “For we are shamed, lame and blind,

Since we played in sweet Tralee”.

The Somers referred to was a Tom Somers from Convent Street, a local wit
and all-round sportsman. He was once asked if he ever score a point.  “I did once”, was his answer, having paid Mrs
Grady for a pint, she gave me the pint, then after a while, she put up a second
pint thinking I had her paid for it, I sang dumb for once.

At an athletic meeting he won a race for the first time. As he was
congratulated on coming first, his answer was, “I am first at last, I was
always behind before.”

The Carnegie Library 

 All the talk of the library prompted people to look up the origins of the Carnegie in Listowel. Here is the result of some delving into the archives.

The Mall, Tralee


The Mall Tralee is pedestrianised. It is now a lovely space.

On the Saturday I visited it even had its own preacher.
