Some interesting old photos

This photo is in the Library of Congress. It shows a Connemara woman spinning, another lady stands at the cottage door knitting and in the foreground are some hens and a wash tub.

This photo is in a collection of old photos of Travellers in The National Library. The poor woman is trying  to wash clothes in a tub at the side of the road, while her children play around her. In the background is her barrel top caravan.

These ladies are standing on a carriage and waving a flag over the perimeter wall of Mountjoy. They are showing their support for the jailed rebels.  The photo was taken in 1920 and is part of a collection in the National Library..

The Big Wave

The above 3 pictures are all posted on JD’s  Facebook page. This is just one of the many events organized for the big push to get behind the Sea Rescue service. Ironically it all came from some negative comments posted online about the service.

People like Mike Enright of Ballybunion Sea Angling were so incensed by the lack of support and criticism of people who do such a vital service that they decided to show Ballybunion’s pride in the Sea Rescue personnel and their support for the great good they do by organizing a big weekend of fundraising. It deserves everyone’s support. If you are reading this from abroad and want to help, the rescue service have a donate button on their website.

Tumbling paddy

I have received a request from a reader for a photograph of a tumbling paddy. I don’t have one but surely someone out there took a photo in a hayfield where some skilled haymaker was gathering hay with one.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, don’t worry. It was before your time.

Photo from The Irish Emigrant Facebook page

So many young Irishmen in search of adventure answered this call. Records of their service will soon be available on line.

Diaries have also been digitized. Here is an extract from  one. I found it on the BBC’s website.

A private war diary kept by one of the First Battalion’s soldiers, Captain James Paterson, has also been digitised.

Captain Paterson died on 1 November, some six weeks after an entry said the scenes he witnessed were “beyond description”.

“Trenches, bits of equipment, clothing (probably blood-stained), ammunition, tools, caps, etc, etc, everywhere. Poor fellows shot dead are lying in all directions. Some of ours,” he said.

“Everywhere the same hard, grim, pitiless sign of battle and war. I have had a belly full of it.”

Bromore in Winter, Listowel shops then and now and more from Listowel, Ontario

This is what Mike Flahive wrote about Bromore near Ballybunion in November.

Here in Bromore Bay the power of the Atlantic Ocean meets the 180 foot Bromore Cliffs. The storm waves rush into the dozen or so caves compressing the air before them and exploding back out again. There is a constant flow of seafoam floating on the updraft like snow.

Listowel, Canada, a Listowel Ireland connection

While Tom Fitzgerald was in Listowel Ontario, he chanced to meet this local counsellor.

His name is Warren Howard

AND

He was in Listowel Co. Kerry in 1971 as a member of a choir. He stayed in Mount Rivers and he sang in the church….I’m not sure if it was St. Mary’s or St. John’s.

Does anyone remember this choir’s visit? Better still, does anyone have a picture?

Today November 11 2013 is Armistice Day in Britain, Veterans’ Day in the U.S.

Royal Irish Rifles at The Somme

Lest any of us forget the horrors our ancestors suffered, here is a link to a site with many many links to sites related to the Irish who fought in the two great wars in Europe.

http://thenewwildgeese.com/profiles/blogs/remembering-the-irish-who-fell-in-the-great-war

Siegfied Sassoon visited Cork and Limerick but there seems to be no account of him visiting Kerry

On April 16, 1917, Siegfried Sassoon, an
officer in the Royal Welch Fusiliers and arguably Britain’s greatest war poet,
was wounded by a German sniper while leading his company in an attack at
Fontaine-les-Croisilles. While recovering from his wounds in England, Sassoon’s
growing anger at the political mismanagement of the war compelled him to write
a scathing attack, which achieved public notoriety after being read aloud in
the House of Commons, “I am making this statement as an act of wilful
defiance of military authority, because I believe that the war is being
deliberately prolonged by those who have the power to end it.”

Unwilling
to risk the adverse publicity that would accompany the court martial of a man
who had been decorated for undoubted acts of bravery, the under-secretary for
war declared that Sassoon was suffering from shell shock and had him sent to a
military psychiatric hospital at Craiglockhart, near Edinburgh. It was during
his incarceration at the hospital that Sassoon wrote “Survivors,” a poem
that displayed his contempt for the authorities who patched-up shattered men
only to return them to combat. It also reveals much about the tortured state of
his own mind:

No doubt
they’ll soon get well; the shock and strain

Have
caused their stammering, disconnected talk.

Of course
they’re ‘longing to go out again,’ —

These
boys with old, scared faces, learning to walk.

They’ll
soon forget their haunted nights; their cowed

Subjection
to the ghosts of friends who died, —

Their
dreams that drip with murder; and they’ll be proud

Of
glorious war that shatter’d all their pride …

Men who
went out to battle, grim and glad;

Children,
with eyes that hate you, broken and mad.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning we shall remember them…..

“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.”

I was listening to Dermot Bolger on RTE1’s Thought for the Day and he told us this. Dermot has a friend who lives in Ypres. When they are digging out the foundations for a house or any other construction, they sift through the earth for any shard of bone, a button or a piece of uniform and then Dermot’s friend tries to match it to his database of the missing.  Even after 90 years, the painstaking job of identifying the casualties of the trenches goes on.

A trench in WW1.

At least it’s dry and the soldiers look relaxed. How many of them never came home, I wonder?
