Con Colbert of Athea

“This slightly decolourised photograph of Con Colbert is included among the collection of papers of Fr. Aloysius Travers OFM Cap. which has recently been made available online at the Digital Repository of Ireland. Colbert was born on 19 October 1888. He was a founding member of the Republican youth organisation, Fianna Éireann. During the Easter Rising, he fought in the area around Jameson’s Distillery. A deeply religious man, Colbert was ministered to by the Capuchin friars of Church Street during his detention in Kilmainham Jail. He was executed on 8 May 1916.”    (photo and text : Facebook)

Con Colbert has streets named after him in Listowel and Abbeyfeale, a train station in Liomerick and a community hall in Athea.

Coincidentally  I read in Saturdays’ Irish Times an obituary to Sr. Íde Woulfe, who died in Belfast . Sr. Íde who was in her 100th year was a niece of Con Colbert. She came from a family of five children of Catherine and Richard Woulfe of Woulfe’s Pharmacy in Abbeyfeale. Her sister, Agatha, was also a nun and all three of her brothers were Holy Ghost priests.

In Athea with my family

My grandchildren were in Listowel for the Community Centre Summer Camp. They are among this group queueing for the cinema on the last day. They saw Minions. “Brilliant,” they said.

After the camp I took Sean and Killian to Athea. When I set my camera to black and white, the boys became part of the picture.

At Hanrahan’s Pet Farm we met this majestic fellow, lord of all he surveyed.

This is Blueberry Home Bakery and Coffee Shop

Jacqueline and Stephen were celebrating being nominated for an Irish Times Best Shops Award.

Athea is a really life affirming place.

I told the boys that I drank water from a pump just like this every day on my way home from school. I think the boys were thinking, “you and Finn McCool.”

They were fascinated by the “Flying Feet” monument to the Ahern brothers. Sean and Killian had never heard of the Hop, Step and Jump. They have now.

The boys posed as sentries at The Goold Monument.

I know nothing about its history. This giant celtic cross would appear to celebrate that rare species, a benevolent landlord.

Killarney in 1954

“Although the caption says that BnM visited Russia later that year, the BnM visit was first. The Dusty mentioned in the background was Dusty Miller who was head of technical development in BnaM at that time. Dusty Miller was a name suited to BnaM, he worked on developing milling machines.” (Bord na Mona Heartland)

Apparently the purpose of the exchange visits was to share ideas on machinery design for harvesting and milling peat.

Remember  ’56

Photo: Terrace Talk

This is a photo of the Kerry team who lost to Cork in the replay in 1956. Will history repeat itself tomorrow?

(Official Munster GAA poster from the internet)

Live Aid, Listowel, Ballybunion and Moyvane and some film news

Today is July 13 2015. Thirty years ago  in 1985 on this day two very significant
events took place. One had world significance, the other just changed my small
world forever.

July 13 1985 is now known as Live Aid Day.

“Live Aidwas a dual-venue concert
held on 13 July 1985. The event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds
for relief of the ongoing Ethiopian famine.
Billed as the “global jukebox”, the event was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium
in London, England, United
Kingdom (attended by 72,000 people) and John F. Kennedy
Stadium
in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, United States (attended by about 100,000 people). On the same day, concerts
inspired by the initiative happened in other countries, such as Australia and Germany. It was one of the
largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time: an
estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched the live
broadcast.”    Wikipedia

Meanwhile back in Ireland I was in a Cork maternity hospital
giving birth to my baby. She was eleven weeks premature and only two and a half
pounds.

Never was the difference between the first and third world so
evident to me. Babies like mine were not even being treated in Ethiopia. They
had no hope. Every effort was being put into the healthy ones.

In Cork my little scrap of humanity was placed in an incubator
with her own nurse whose only task was to look after Clíona round the clock.

Today Clíona is thirty.

 Happy birthday, my baby.

“Where are you goin’ my little one, little one?

Where are you goin’ my baby, my own?

Turn around and you’re two

Turn around and you’re four

Turn around and you’re a young girl

Going out of the door.”

The words of the late Val Doonican’s song say everything about how fast
30 years have flown.

Some Random Listowel Buildings in Summer 2015

This premises on Market St. used to be Mary B.’s. The dining part has had various Chinese restaurants over the years and now it is Nanjing Listowel. The licensed premises has changed hands a few times too. It is now Brosnan’s Bar and has recently been refurbished.

O’Connor’s Pharmacy on Market St. is one of the prettiest shopfronts in town.

This building on Main St. used to be Chute’s Bar. In the heyday of the Celtic Tiger this was one of the busiest bars in town. It is now slowly undergoing a change of use and has been recently painted.

The Star and Garter on Church St. is another business that has recently undergone a change of ownership. It is now the bar to go to for craft beer, I’m told.

Next door to The Star and Garter is the New Kingdom, a popular bar with a popular and generous host.

This is now that stretch of Church Street looks today. The shop at the end is the old Coco, now relocated to William St.

This is the new look Listowel Garden Centre, well set back from the road with its own parking area.

Changes Hair and Beauty is a thriving business in a very pretty building on Upper Church St.

This is the side view of Listowel Credit Union and the lane beside it on a day when it was, very unusually, free of parked cars. This is directly across the road from Changes.

all the businesses that once thrived in the village like bakeries, butchers,
harness makers, and the legendary characters who ran them.

Fitzmaurice will start at the site of Horan’s forge on the Tarbert Road.
Refreshments will be provided in Brosnan’s bar afterwards where the
conversation can continue. All are welcome to attend.

Who he?

This young man’s name is Mark Noonan.

So?

He has just won awards all round him in Berlin and Galway for his film, “You’re Ugly Too”.

So?

He has a Listowel connection.

Tell me.

Mark is an up and coming film writer and director. He is the nephew of Helen Moylan and Tess Noonan of Listowel.

While I’m on the subject of films, don’t forget that the great Song of the Sea is in cinemas now.

Will Collins, who scripted Song of the Sea was in Listowel for this year’s Writers Week. He is pictured above with Máire Logue.

Book Launches and Writers at Writers’ Week 2015 and a trip to Kildare

There are few things more enjoyable in the annual Writers’ Week programme than the launch of a book by a local author. This year I missed Mary Kennelly’s and Matt Mooney’s events but I made John MacAulliffe’s in The Seanchaí. It was a really popular event and could have done with a bigger venue.  John is  much more than a local poet. He is now intentionally recognized .

Children’s Author visits Athea Primary School.

This is Andrew Cope and his wife Louise at The National Children’s Literary Festival at Listowel Writers’ Week 2015. Andrew writes the very popular Spy Dog and Spy Puppy children’s books.

It was my pleasure to be assigned to be his driver for the day. Andrew’s job was to visit Athea Primary School and to read from his novels and talk to the children about writing.

I gave him a quick tour of the village. He was happy to leave his worries behind at the worry tree. Andrew has studied the science of happiness and he is a very popular motivational speaker in his native U.K. He has developed a  course called The Art of Being Brilliant. Maybe he will be back with that next year.

Andrew with the principal and some staff members in Athea.

Athea pupils enjoyed Andrew’s stories and helped him with ideas for another one.

Boys queueing up for Andrew’s autograph.

Tomás Ó Sé’s Sunday Game Clobber

Tomás Ó Sé gave the commentators on Twitter a great night on Sunday when he rocked up in a tux.

Here are a few of the best comments:

Anyone know who Tomás Ó Sé is playing in the snooker?

The name’s Ó’ Sé; Tomás Ó Sé

Did Tomás get dressed out of Dónal Óg Cusack’s locker?

Is Tomás Ó Sé going to his Debs later?

But the best came from a Kerry supporter;

The man has five All Ireland medals. He can wear what he likes.

Writers’ Week, Athea, Sporting people, old Listowel photos and Cycle against Suicide in town

Listowel Writers’ Week 2015

I was in Bank of Ireland on Friday with Liz Dunn, Margaret Broderick and David Browne on an awareness raising mission for this year’s brilliant programme.

In my picture, Liz and Margaret are holding the poster for the Children’s programme. This year your baby can boogie with Jo Jordan or your older designer can make a headpiece with Aoife Hannon. If your offspring are not into dancing or millinery, they can sit and listen to fabulous authors like Shane Hegarty (Darkmouth) or Sarah Webb  who has a marvelous website Sarah Webb with tips for aspiring writers and study notes for the teacher who wants to use her books in the classroom.

And that’s only a small taste of what will be happening in Listowel Community Centre for

National Children’s Literary Festival 2015

There really is something for everyone and again this year Easons Listowel are sponsoring some of the prizes.

That’s the June weekend’s entertainment sorted for you!

Athea Revisited

On the May holiday weekend I had visitors. Visitors are always my perfect excuse to visit Athea.

Such is Jim Dunn’s skill as an artist that I think his man and horse in the mural look as real as Tony and Mary who were  enthralled by them.

Jim’s work is progressing on the other side of The Forge. I am fascinated to see the scene come to life.

My visitors live in the Heartland of Bord na Mona so I showed them the other mural as well and they were particularly taken with the turf cutting scene.

As we walked over the bridge on our way to Fairy Mountain, we came upon this lovely man feeding the wild ducks.

Bugs proved a little elusive.

Leaving her worries behind.
