Wren Boys, flooding and an FCA Reunion

Goodbye to 2015

As I resume after my break,  I’ll bring you a few late December memories.

Mourners being transported to Saints’ Island Graveyard, Co Longford, for the burial of Johnny Clarke. Photograph: James Flynn/APX     (Joe.ie)

This sad image sums up the disruption to normal life wrought by one storm after another this winter.

We were lucky to escape the worst of it here in North Kerry.

This photo was taken by David Morrissey in Mallow. That is a bus shelter completely submerged.

Killavullen, Co. Cork  (photo; Scan Productions for Cork Flood Alerts)

This is the regional park in Ballincollig. The new path which was only completed this summer and the newly developed pitches were completely covered in water.

……………..

I have written before about the costly disaster that was the Diarmuid Gavin garden in Cork’s Fitzgerald’s Park. Well, they have another costly disaster on their hands  at the moment.

This was how the “garden” looked last time I was there.

This state of the art children’s playground cost €600,000. It was opened in June with much fanfare. As you can see from the professional picture, taken by Kompan at the opening, it is designed to look like a ship. It is made almost entirely of wood and is sunken and it has seating all round. The project was co funded by Cork County Council and the Bons Secours Hospital. The playground was designed to be accessible to disabled as well as able bodied children. Today it is accessible to no one.

On Dec 29 2015 my despondent granddaughter looks on at the flooded playground…..flooded not by the nearby river Lee but by rainwater. The clever design does not appear to have any drainage, so it filled up with rainwater in the deluge we experienced in December. Now, because it is all made of wood, it will be completely compromised and probably contaminated. It may all have to come out. What a disaster!

Do I foresee another costly lawsuit?

Hunting the Wran

The wren, the wren  (wren is pronounced wran in the country)

The king of all birds

On Stephen’s Day

He got caught in the furze.

Up with the kettle

And down with the pan

And give us a penny

To bury the wren.

Ita Hannon took a few photos of 2015 Wren Boys.

Her brother shared a few photos of troupes hunting the “wran” in days of yore:

No Photos from Listowel’s Panto?

If you are wondering why I am not posting any panto photos, here is the short answer; I was asked not to.

The panto was great. I was there with my grandchildren. We, in the audience, were told not to photograph the performance, so I didn’t.

A Night Out in Listowel

Look at that famous person in a photograph with John Relihan!

Thursday night is Theme Night in Allos. This dining experience is very popular with Allos patrons and you’d never know who might turn up there on any given Thursday. On Thursday week it was Duagh’s most famous chef who was dining out with his family…and he recognized me!

This young man is going places so I predict we’ll be hearing more of him in the future. The brilliant and extraordinary event he brought to Duagh last August will Iive long in folk memory.

You can relive it for a moment here   Duagh Summer Festival 2014

Barbecue at Duagh Summer festival 2014.

John’s next big adventure is the Big Grill Festival in Dublin’s Herbert Park from August 13 to August 16 2015.

John B.’s

After Allos, we headed across town to John B. Keane’s for a night of music and drama. Mickey MacConnell was our musician and singer for the night.

Paddy McElligott was there to provide the drama.

David O’Sullivan was not officially on the bill but his song which combined Percy French’s ode to the West Clare Railway with our own Lartigue went down a treat.

Maura MacConnell was enjoying the craic.

Kathy Walshe enjoyed Paddy’s dramatic rendering of John B.’s account of a hurling match in the churchyard.

Sean and Deirdre Lyons were enjoying the entertainment.

Paul Manning was a special guest on the night.

He was reunited with his old friend for a song.

A Big Milestone

In Athea with my family

My grandchildren were in Listowel for the Community Centre Summer Camp. They are among this group queueing for the cinema on the last day. They saw Minions. “Brilliant,” they said.

After the camp I took Sean and Killian to Athea. When I set my camera to black and white, the boys became part of the picture.

At Hanrahan’s Pet Farm we met this majestic fellow, lord of all he surveyed.

This is Blueberry Home Bakery and Coffee Shop

Jacqueline and Stephen were celebrating being nominated for an Irish Times Best Shops Award.

Athea is a really life affirming place.

I told the boys that I drank water from a pump just like this every day on my way home from school. I think the boys were thinking, “you and Finn McCool.”

They were fascinated by the “Flying Feet” monument to the Ahern brothers. Sean and Killian had never heard of the Hop, Step and Jump. They have now.

The boys posed as sentries at The Goold Monument.

I know nothing about its history. This giant celtic cross would appear to celebrate that rare species, a benevolent landlord.

Killarney in 1954

“Although the caption says that BnM visited Russia later that year, the BnM visit was first. The Dusty mentioned in the background was Dusty Miller who was head of technical development in BnaM at that time. Dusty Miller was a name suited to BnaM, he worked on developing milling machines.” (Bord na Mona Heartland)

Apparently the purpose of the exchange visits was to share ideas on machinery design for harvesting and milling peat.

Duagh Bell Restored

Some people hold a raffle, others push a bed but Duagh set a new standard for fundraising with a marvellous food festival that set The Mall and half of North Kerry talking for a memorable weekend in Summer 2014. All in aid of their church bell.

A proud son of Duagh and master chef, John Relihan assembled a band of chefs, barbecue specialists and assorted volunteers and they provided a festival that will be talked about in North Kerry for many a long day.

Party, Party, Party

Two Listowel businesses celebrated in style on Easter Saturday April 5 2015

Listowel Garden Centre opened their awesome new store with a party for the town. Listowel Garden Centre is a family affair for Nick and Liz Roberts. Here are some photos of this very enterprising family who have truly enhanced our town with this beautiful new centre.

McAuliffes were out in force to support Liz and Nick. At the door I met Barry, home from the U.S. for the occasion. He was celebrating the grand opening with one of his cousins. Inside I met Nick and the entire Roberts family, busily serving customers. Barry’s family were also there  in numbers. I missed the big moment when Mrs. McAulliffe, Liz’s mum, cut the ribbon but Kelly McAuliffe kindly sent me her photo of the family at the door.

Listowel Garden Centre has passed a great vote of confidence in Listowel’s economy. Everyone wishes them well in their new venture.

The other party on Saturday was in the always stylish premises of Perfect Pairs on Church St. where Mairead and Martina were celebrating ten years in business.

Easter Hope

Billy Keane has written  poem for our friend Fr. Pat Moore.

LINES FOR FATHER PAT MOORE ON EASTER SUNDAY MORNING 2015

The morning’s light

Was cueing outside

The black -out blinds

And men with cows milked,

Broke bread for a second time.

The sad choir sang the song of despair

But Our Moore’s prayers

Are the daily resurrection.

“We must peel life back to the essential,”

Of love and hope, the love of our time”

And the hosts of the Easter light

Shine through

In wafer lines.

Soon enough, they’ll be spraying our friend again.

He’ll be tired then from the rays of the gun,

But Our Moore knows as surely as anyone,

Even among the thorns and weeds,

Small flowers sing a te deum.

Billy Keane.

An old homestead

This house is situated outside Tarbert beside the old Kirby’s Lanterns

It is the ancestral home of one Brian C. Smith who is Mayor of the Village of Irvington and Head Trader at Blue Ridge Capital LLC. Didn’t he do well?

This is what he posted on his Facebook page after his Irish visit when he showed his children their great grandmother’s home in Ireland.

“What a great day in Ireland! Stopped by my great-grandmother’s house in Limerick (right on the Kerry border). It is still there but not in the best shape. Was great to be able to show it to my children – gotta remember your roots! The best part was my tour guide, Philip Kiely, my cousin in Ireland. Loads of laughs and lots of fun.”
